Derek Lam is taking Ivanka Trump to task over her Cadie wedge sandals. The high end designer’s legal team issued Donald’s daughter a cease-and-desist letter after similarities between the shoes and Lam’s Ayami wedges were noted.

Of course wedges always have similarities, but these shoes seem like carbon copies of one another. If it weren’t for the names on the soles you probably couldn’t tell them apart. Unless you were looking at the price tags, that is. The Derek Lam Ayami shoes on the left retail for $780 while Ivanka Trump’s Cadie on the right sells for just $150.
Derek Lam’s chief executive officer Jan-Hendrik Schlottmann said his firm had seen shoes comparable to Lam’s designs before, but never a pair of sandals that were “perfectly copied. It’s such an investment to make a shoe … we had to protest this.”
Schlottman admits that he hasn’t seen the Cadie shoes in person yet, but he’s ordered a pair from Bloomingdale’s to compare the pairs. He also added that he doesn’t hold Ivanka Trump personally responsible for the counterfeit design as she uses a license company.
Apparently Lam’s legal team is investigating the sales records of the Cadie wedges, so the company may sue for damages yet. Do you think this case should end up in the courts?
