Travel accessories Tumi is expanding its fashion horizons after signing a deal with REM Eyewear. The company plans to release sunglasses and prescription eyewear in the new year.
It seems like a bit of a leap from luggage to sunglasses, but the shades will feature elements Tumi’s known for. The rings of Saturn at the temple tips are inspired by Tumi’s zipper pulls, while the acid-etched designs are reminiscent of Tumi’s iconic ballistic print. The frames are made from lightweight and durable carbon-fiber, and wrapped with leather for comfort. The sunglasses also feature new polarized lenses, which are triple coated to resist dirt, water, oil, and dust. Each one comes packaged in a distinctive triangular ballistic nylon case, which folds flat when it’s not in use.

REM’s chief executive officer Mike Hundert says his firm has spent more than two years developing the products. He added that “Tumi consumers love their experiences with this brand, and our eyewear will build on that tradition.”
We can look forward to the release of 12 Traverso sunglasses in January, followed by the launch of 10 optical styles and the Compatto reader in March. The Tumi eyewear will be released globally and available through high end fashion and eyewear retailers, including Tumi stores. The sunglasses are slated to cost between $225 and $295, while the prescription glasses should cost between $225 and $275.
